hitting the new york and new jersey area on tuesday. new york city's mayor says no reason to panic. >> we have opened the office emergency management situation room already and the nyc coastal storm plan was activated morning. >> reporter: officials in the northeast preparing for the storm and relying on less sops learned from last year's hurricane irene. >> you saw in irene, we didn't move a lot of people out of the seniors homes and hospitals and if necessary, we are prepared to do the same thing. >> reporter: hurricane sandy has already ripped through jamaica and cuba and now it is in the bahamas. heavy rain and strong winds damaging many homes, knocking down power lines and uprooting trees. the cuban government says more than 50,000 people evacuated before the storm made landfall. sandy also forcing officials to postpone terror-related hearings at guantanamo bay. although no deaths have been reported in could you be arc

eastern florida is being impacted. my uncle called yesterday and he lives in southeast florida and he said no electricity. >> already. >> 40, 50-mile per hour gusts down there. that is where the main event is this morning. you can see here on our satellite-radar it remains pretty much intact. still a tropical storm, maximum winds 85 miles per hour. that makes day category one hurricane. it is going to go flu a transition here over the next 24 hours or so where it becomes what we call extra-tropical. there are a lot of question about what will happen as that process takes place. it looks like late in the weekend, early next week, monday, tuesday, will probably be prime time when we start to be impacted by the storm. it could be extremely heavy rains. we could have extreme gusty winds. we could have 50 or 60-mile an hour wind for a long period of time. that causes lots of issues with

toward the east coast leaving people here preparing for the worst. >> reporter: in parts of florida, rough waves are already crashing on the shoreline as hurricane sandy approaching the u.s. >> we are keeping everybody out of the water. we are not putting the guard in the towers because it's little bit dangerous with the wind so we are patrolling in our trucks. >> reporter: the hurricane is expected to merge with a winter storm and blast of arctic air. weather forecasters say atlantis agood chance much of the east coast will get hit with gale force winds, heavy rain,ed intoing and maybe even snow. >> you will have lots of people affected. >> reporter: some folks in maryland are already heading to home detoe to stock occupy supplies. >> it has been a very active morning. >> looking at a generator. time to have some back-up. >> reporter: lot storm is not expected to hit until early next week, utility officials in connecticut aren't taxing any chances. >> we are having conversations

but this time, i'm glad that everything came out okay. >> johnson faces up to 13 years in prison. he is scheduled to be sentenced in december. though johnson's attorney says they will appeal that verdict. also in prince george's county, new charges have been filed against two men in connection with a crash that killed a police officer. in august, officer adrian morris was killed while pursuing two suspects. those suspects now face new were chas. neal has been chornlged with motor vehicle manslaughter theft and fleeing and elouding police. mitchell faces theft charges and unauthorized use of a vehicle. more fallout from an undercover video that led congressman jim moran's son to resign as his father's campaign field director. he can be heard telling someone how to cast ballots in the name of voters who rare will you

there but it is a little cool. 63 in quantico. let's talk today first for local weather. we'll be just fine f you look real carefully, you can see the light gray, the fog and clouds. the air is getting pushed in off the ocean and giving us that little maritime layer to start the day. -- if you look real carefully, we'll get a partly sunny afternoon with highs about 70. this front out here, you want to watch that. that will become a player in our forecast for the weekend. here is the latest with sandy. still a category one hurricane. doing a nice job of keeping itself intact. not quite as impressive with the satellite signature as yesterday but you can see it is lifting off to the north- northwest at about 13 miles per hour. it will continue to take this track for the next 24 hours or so and then things will get more interesting. i'll show you the potential

track here as we get into the next couple of days. here is the official track by the national hurricane center. likely to undergo a transition here over the next 24 to 48 hours. it will still be the equivalent of a category one hurricane. the transition tax place as we get into the end of the weekend, early next week. -- the transition takes place as we get into the end. the weekend, early next week. i've never seen a hurricane make this path t will be interesting to see if it does so t look like a strong storm as it makes its way inland in southern portions of new jersey by sometime on monday into tuesday and this is the big issue. this is just going to batter away and it may no longer be a

hush but we could see 50, 60- mile per hour winds sustained across the area for a long time. this is a very, very slow mover. it will kind of fill here as it falls apart just to our north. so things could be a little dicey around here to say the least by monday and tuesday. here is your forecast for today. no problems to today. early clouds and fog. sun later today. there is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. the time frame on this would be sunday afternoon into late tuesday, perhaps wednesday. we would have very windy conditions around here and the potential for extremely heavy rain as that storm system makes its way inland just north of us. julie wright has the latest on your traffic this morning. >> well, freaky friday, maybe. you never know. it is heap or close to it. right now on the roads, you will find your lanes are open. no incidents reported right now continuing northbound on 395. this is a smooth commute so far as you travel northbound in the main line and the hovs
